Fish River
Canyon
Africa's Largest Canyon
Situated in the far south of Namibia, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world, just after the Grand Canyon in the US, and is true geological wonder. At 160 km long and up to 500 m deep, it provides for beautiful awe-inspiring landscapes where deep gorges and towering rock faces provide for some of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes.
The canyon is located within the /Ai /Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. Despite the very limited rainfall (an average of 68mm per year) biodiversity levels are unique with up to 360 different plants species being found within just a 1 sq km area making it not only a destination to view the Fish River Canyon, but also an ideal destination for nature lovers that like to explore on foot.
Whilst hiking down into the canyon is limited (May to September) due to extreme heat and the risk of flash flooding in the rainy season, the canyon surrounds offer some amazing scenery and different private lodges & reserves in the area offer a range of activities from guided hikes to nature drives. A truly unique region that is often and sadly unseen because of the vast distances needed to reach it.
Accommodation in the vicinity of the canyon doesn’t just include those inside the park at Hobas & Ai Ais, but also several campsites, and mid range lodges within a short distance of the main viewpoint at Hobas. For those looking for a little more comfort, Fish River Lodge, situated on the rim of the canyon on the western side (outside the national park), is an ideal option offering incredibly views, and a range of activities from day hikes or drives, to overnight hiking adventures.
