Zambia – Rivers, Falls, and Wilderness

Zambia makes an excellent extension to any Namibia safari, especially for travellers exploring the northeast or the Zambezi Region. Southern Zambia is the most accessible part of the country from Namibia, with several overland routes. It offers a dramatic change in scenery, shifting from dry woodlands and savannahs to riverfront camps, lush floodplains, and the thunder of Victoria Falls.
Lark Journeys specialises in custom trips that link Namibia with Zambia’s southern highlights, combining easy logistics with exceptional experiences — from gentle canoe safaris to cultural and natural landmarks.

Why Add Zambia to Your Namibia Safari?

Zambia combines water, wildlife, and culture into one destination. The Zambezi River defines much of its southern region, offering boat-based game viewing, fishing, canoeing, and photographic opportunities. Unlike Namibia’s more arid north, Zambia’s southern parks are greener.
Many travellers cross into Zambia specifically to see Victoria Falls. Still, we recommend going beyond — whether it’s a few nights along the Lower Zambezi or exploring hidden gems around Livingstone. Zambia also allows easy onward travel to Zimbabwe or even back into Namibia, making it ideal for circular routes.

Highlights of Zambia

Victoria Falls (Livingstone)
One of Africa’s greatest natural wonders, accessible via Kazungula or Katima Mulilo. Offers stunning viewpoints, adventure activities, and a vibrant town atmosphere.
Lower Zambezi National Park
A rich wildlife area along the river, with a focus on canoeing, boating, and small, high-quality camps. Less busy than some better-known parks but equally rewarding.
Kafue
The southern reaches of Kafue are reachable by road from Livingstone and offer vast open plains, good predator sightings, and seasonal floodplains.
Sioma Ngwezi and Ngonye Falls
Lesser-known but geographically close to Namibia, this region includes remote bush and small-scale tourism experiences. Best suited to self-drive or guided specialist trips.

How It Combines With Namibia

Zambia is easily accessed from Namibia’s northeast, particularly from Katima Mulilo or Kasane (via Zimbabwe or Botswana). Travellers often visit the Zambezi Region and cross into Zambia to visit Victoria Falls, or continue to the Lower Zambezi via short internal flights from Livingstone.
The combination works well for those wanting to link water-focused safari activities with Namibia’s more open and drier landscapes. Zambia also serves as a gateway for onward travel into Zimbabwe or a loop back into Namibia via the eastern parks.

When to Travel

The best time to visit southern Zambia is from May to October, during the dry season when wildlife viewing is at its peak and roads are more accessible. Victoria Falls is most dramatic from February to June (depending on rainfall), while the Lower Zambezi’s camps operate seasonally, generally reopening in April or May. The green season offers lush scenery and abundant birdlife, but it may also involve some logistical challenges.
