Angola

Extend Your Namibia Safari Into Angola’s South

For travellers in search of a unique safari, Angola presents an opportunity to delve into unspoiled landscapes and cultures. This journey begins just beyond Namibia’s northern border. While not a mainstream destination, southern Angola pairs beautifully with Namibia’s Kaokoland or Kunene Region, offering a shared cultural history, dramatic terrain, and a true frontier feel.

At Lark Journeys, we specialise in cross-border safaris that blend Namibia with the remote allure of Angola, often following overland routes from Epupa or the Marienfluss.

Why Add Angola to Your Namibia Safari?

Angola is accessible by road directly from Namibia’s northwest, via Opuwo or Epupa. It shares a rich cultural heritage with the Himba and Mucubal communities, offering unique opportunities for cultural immersion. The wild and uncrowded landscapes in places like Iona National Park and the Namibe desert provide exceptional opportunities for photography and meaningful cultural engagement. It is an off-the-beaten-path region, and we provide comprehensive travel logistics support with experienced guides.
Angola is not for first-time safari-goers, but for seasoned travellers, it’s a striking and rewarding frontier.

Highlights of Angola

Iona National Park
Once part of Namibia’s larger conservation network, Iona offers vast desert plains, rocky outcrops, and rare wildlife sightings — best accessed with the guidance of an experienced guide.
Miradouro da Lua
Located just south of Luanda, this surreal “Moon Viewpoint” features layered cliffs and canyons sculpted by erosion over centuries. It’s an easily accessible and visually striking stop for travellers continuing further into Angola.
Mucubal and Himba Encounters
These cross-border communities offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in shared traditions in a manner that is respectful and has a minimal impact on the local culture.
Kalandula Falls
Among the largest waterfalls in Africa by volume, Kalandula Falls is a spectacular and relatively little-known natural wonder located in Angola’s northern region. Best visited as part of a longer route combining cultural and scenic highlights.
Namibe Coastline
A surreal stretch of desert meeting the Atlantic Ocean, complete with Portuguese colonial remnants and eerie coastal dunes.
Serra da Leba Pass
One of Angola’s most iconic mountain roads, the Serra da Leba offers dramatic switchbacks and panoramic views as you descend from the highlands toward the coast—a must for photographers and overland enthusiasts.

How It Combines With Namibia

Angola is best added to a remote northwest Namibia itinerary, typically including places like Kaokoland, Epupa Falls, Marienfluss, or the Skeleton Coast. Travel is generally guided and supported due to the remoteness, limited infrastructure, and the requirement for permits. Most travellers add three to five nights in Angola as part of a more extended custom safari.

When to Travel

The dry season, from May to October, is considered the best time to travel, as it offers improved road conditions and cooler weather. Border crossings are possible at Ruacana, Oshikango, or near Epupa, depending on the route and timing.

Travel With Us

We don’t offer Angola as a standalone destination. Still, if your Namibia safari is already heading into the wild northwest, it’s a logical and rewarding extension. Let us handle the route planning, permits, logistics, and support so that you can focus on the experience.
