Swakopmund

One of the most interesting and surreal towns in Namibia.

Swakopmund is one of the most interesting and surreal towns in Namibia. With a rich German history, this little coastal town offers a unique mix of German and Namibian culture, architecture and energy and is yet another contrast to Namibia’s ever changing landscapes.

It is both, a perfect place to get some rest and recreation after a demanding safari as well as a centre for adventure activities including quad biking, skydiving, dune boarding to name just a few. For those not keen on getting the heart pumping, instead relax and try some of Swakopmund’s local coffee houses, gin distilleries or micro breweries, to try some local brews.

Due to it’s location, nestled between the cold Atlantic and the, more often than not, hot Namib Desert, Swakopmund generally starts its day shrouded in low lying fog which generally burns off by mid-morning encouraging you to lie in, have a leisurely breakfast before heading out for the day and enjoying the coastal area.

Whilst most tourists choose to spend a minimum of 2 nights in Swakopmund, there is plenty to keep you busy there should you decide to stay a little longer, anything from adventure activities, to exploring the boutique-style shops and enjoying delicious seafood dinners in some of the top local restaurants, to day trips along the Skeleton Coast including Cape Cross Seal Colony and the Moon Landscape or even further afield to Spitzkoppe for a day out rock climbing, hiking or practicing some photography skills.

Many people also choose Swakopmund as their base for exploring Walvis Bay and the Walvis Bay Lagoon, famed as the season home to a healthy population of both the greater and lesser flamingo. Walvis Bay is also the gateway to Sandwich Harbour, a destination that can easily be explored in a half day activity whilst stay in Swakopmund.

The town itself boasts and impressive array of accommodation options from campsites and backpackers hostels to small boutique style guesthouses, to budget, mid range and luxury hotels so there really is something for everyone.
